A teaser image for a weekly comic project I would like to get going.

Ayden

Originally this characters name was going to be Atyom, but then I realized how hard that would be to pronounce. This is actually the lead character for the story as well.

Erikah

Well here she is, the female lead for the story I'm currently working on.

Character design: beginning to (almost) end

Okay so obviously you always start out with some concept sketches working and reworking your character. This first sketch is where the character I was designing really began to come through.
The next phase was for me to nail down a face. I liked the direction the face was going, but there was still something wrong. As you can tell from the erased lines on the picture above I decided to cut her hair short and remove the pony tail. I also really got a feel for her expressions and the type of presence she was going to have.
Next I revisited her costume, I really liked the shorts, sneakers and leggings, but I really wasn't feeling the tank top or the bracelets. So I removed both of those items and instead put her in a baseball T (I will never understand why we call long sleeved shirts "Tees") Now I finally have my character.
After this step all that is left is my red line, blue line, and final line stages. (Aside from color of course)
And there she is. I should have a full color illustration up soon, but school is getting pretty busy so don't quote me on that.

As I have said before I am experimenting with pixel art so I figured I would post some of the new stuff that I have done in that area...isn't he cute. I'm hoping to use this character in a retro themed side scroller I am developing.

The Man Who Can Save Hollywood

Most movie goers have never heard of Nicolas Wending Refn even those who went to go see the criminally underrated Drive. Drive being his first film to get him any sort of recognition outside of the independent film scene finally got hollywood to look at him. He is currently in the process of directing two films his first a film written and directed by himself, Only God Forgives, the other a remake of the science fiction classic Logans Run. Now for those of you who know nothing about Refn he is notorious for his dark gritty stories punctuated by horrendous acts of violence that would make horror film aficionados cringe. Now as to why I believe he can save hollywood, and yes weather you believe it or not hollywood is in trouble. It seems that anyone who is original and is pegged by hollywood quickly looses vast amounts of there creativity. Case and point Christopher Nolan, nothing against the Batman movies they are brilliant crime dramas, and nothing against Inception its one of the most brilliant films to come out of hollywood in a while. But in comparison to his earlier work its surprisingly weak, Following and Memento are both head and shoulders above Inception and the Batman movies. So here's why I believe Refn can save hollywood...because Refn hates the hollywood way of doing things, yet hollywood is so desperate to get a hold of him. Due to his nonconformist nature and a desire to make the films he wants he will always maintain his creativity. If he can do that while weeding his way into hollywood he could potentially change the landscape of hollywood.

To spite my friends

For those of you who read this and don't know, I suffer from both depression and anxiety. My Meyers Briggs type is INTJ. (for those of you who don't know what that means go to wikipedia.) Also please know that it is an absolute recipe for disaster.
Because of my personality type I am highly sensitive to rejection, I may not let on that I am, to those of you that know me, but I am. Also realize that its about perceived rejection, meaning someone may not intend to make me feel rejected, but they may do so by simply deciding that they would rather hang out with someone else rather than me. (please note that it is much more common with women than men...I have no idea why) This makes me rather depressed and then the anxiety comes all the dumb questions someone with anxiety asks, "Was I annoying them" "Did I do something to make them mad" "Am I just a terrible friend" etc.
I always tell myself in these situations that I need to go to God, but yesterday I was feeling a little rejected and was trying to go to God, but I came to the realization I was going to God for the wrong reason. The reason I was going to God was not for strength or comfort, I was going to him to spite my friends. Basically it was my way of saying "Fine if you don't need me then I don't need you, I've got God (Sticks out tongue)" I took far less comfort in Gods presence because I was approaching him with the wrong mind set. God needs to be about what is holy and approaching him out of a spiteful attitude can be dangerous. Some of the thoughts that go through ones head when you approach God out of spite are...not very pleasant shall we say. Needless to say that when you do go to God make sure it is for pure and right reasons.

My Faith Part 2

All too often non christians make the assumption that we are a bunch of stuck up tightwads who attempt to adhere to a moral standard which no human being could ever live up to. This is not the case, we screw up just like everybody else. Any christian who tries to hide his sin is considered by the bible to be obtuse. We as christians are to confront our sin lay it before God and try to do better next time. See I as a christian don't have to be worried about my sin  because christ saved me. Many people before they become christians try to solve their short comings by themselves. Now I'm not going to say that hypocrisy doesn't exist within the christian faith, because, sadly it does. But I guess the point I'm trying to get at is that christians are all every bit as imperfect as non-christians. The only difference is that I have been saved by simply committing my life to God.

A simple test animation

A simple little animation test that I did just today...I'm hoping to flesh out the technique, and develop it further. This is what happens when you give an artist a gif maker and an hour of time.

AWESOME!!!

Our animation made it onto the front page of deviant art...AWWWWWWWWW YEAHHHHHHHH!!!

In my dark cave

I probably will be doing a lot of animating this weekend. So hopefully I'll have something to show for my efforts on Monday. Pray for me.

Super Dorky

This is a rough inked version of an illustration I am doing. I'm thinking of doing a spin-off comic and giving Super Dorky her own. Bare in mind that this is an extremely rough version I still have to clean it up and color it. Sorry, Cara, if I exaggerated your proportions too much.

Geek and Sundry: Everyone check this out...if you haven't already

My Faith: Part 1

It's been a while since I've posted and I apologize for that. Today I thought I would take the time to define what the Christian faith is. I notice that a lot of people have a tendency to completely misconstrue what our faith is. Calling us out as judgmental, violent, arrogant, and exclusive. So let me tell you what my faith is. First and foremost my faith is not one of judgement, according to my faith that is to left to the one who made me. Unfortunately I understand where a lot of the backlash about judgement comes from. I personally have never met a judgmental Christian, but I have heard horror stories of people being beat up, spat on, made fun of, even killed. This is not my faith, what my God mandates is that I care for others no ifs ands or buts. Even this can be difficult however, and even I as a Christian struggle with this.
Many people claim that Christianity is exclusive, and to a degree it is. We as Christians do believe that the only way that you can live this life to the fullest and make it to the next is by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. However, I as one who tries to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ will never ever tell anyone that they can't be a Christian. A lot of people are often scared away from the faith because they fear a bunch of dos and don'ts. I'm here to tell you that that is not what my faith is. No where in the bible does it say you can't smoke, no where in the bible does it say that you can't drink, no where in the bible does it say that you can't watch rated R movies.
As I continue to write about my faith I hope that I will be able to go more in depth and give people a greater sense of what Christianity is about and that it isn't necessarily what the general populace assumes it to be.

Slaying The Dragon

We all know the story: the prince goes on a long journey, kills the dragon, and rescues the damsel. So what about slaying the dragon? We as Christians know it must be done, but why do we feel this need to pretty up the slaying? We make it clean, finessed...watered down. We make this assumption that there is no blood, that the prince doesn't get hurt, and that the dragon is killed with a nice paper cut sized slash to the heart. When in fact the battle is long, it's tiring, it's bloody, and above all it is painful. We as Christians either ignore this fact, or even worse twist the truth in order to make it more pleasant. Christians are equipped to fight the dragon why do we assume that it's not a violent battle? We avoid the truth of the battle because we are afraid.
I use this as an example to show how watered down the Christian film industry has become. Why are we afraid to show the truth just because it's uncomfortable. Show some violence, because that's how life is, show some nudity, because that's how life is, show some cussing, because that's how life is. If Christian directors, writers, illustrators, believe that showing the cruel reality of the world is some how wrong, then they end up watering down the battle, and the message loses all impact.

Some quirky drawings

Some rather odd renditions of some of my friends. I really want to make them into foam puppets if I ever get the chance. Also the one with the bubble head...that's me. Unfortunately I'm not really sure how to make the feet work because they are so small, but I think that if I keep at it I could make it work.
